George Stephenson was a famous engineer, who was born in the Northeast of England. A statue proudly stands at the junction of Neville Street and Westgate Road in Newcastle upon Tyne, near the Central Station, to commemorate his achievements.
One of his most famous achievements was in Sunderland when he constructed The Hetton Colliery Railway, which commemorates its Bicentenary in November 2022.
The Cultural Spring has commissioned Sunderland Male Voice Choir to produce a new song about 'George Stephenson and The Hetton Colliery Railway'. The new song will be premiered at a concert at Hetton Methodist Church on Friday, 4th November 2022.
The Cultural Spring aims to increase arts
participation in areas of Sunderland and South Tyneside that don’t have a tradition
of arts engagement. It is funded by Arts Council England’s Creative People and
Places project and its five partners are University of Sunderland, the Customs
House (South Shields), Sunderland Music, Arts and Culture (MAC) Trust; Young
Asian Voices (YAV) and The Cultural Spring Charity.
