Sunderland Male Voice Choir is creating a series of new songs about the heritage and people of Hendon under 'The Hendon Project'.
One of these themes is 'The Early Community of Sunderland'. Hendon was one of the earliest populated parts of the town of Sunderland. The first record of shipbuilding in Sunderland was in 1346 when Thomas Menville built a vessel at Hendon. The area was also popular for bathing and leisure before the Industrial Revolution.
