Sunderland Male Voice Choir is creating a series of new songs about the heritage and people of Hendon under 'The Hendon Project'.
One of these themes is 'Hendon - Heart of Shipbuilding'. Sunderland was at one time proclaimed as 'the greatest shipbuilding port in the world'. The first record of shipbuilding in Sunderland was in 1346 when Thomas Menville built a vessel at Hendon.
