Sunderland Male Voice Choir began on 15 May 1959, when just ten men met in the schoolroom of Station Road Methodist Church, Shiney Row. Between them they contributed £1 to buy music, and within a year the choir had grown to 21 members and established what would become a long tradition of public concerts.
For more than six decades the choir was known as Shiney Row Male Voice Choir. In July 2022, it became Sunderland Male Voice Choir, reflecting its ambition to represent and welcome singers and audiences from across the whole city and beyond. Its first public appearance under the new name took place at a Citizenship Ceremony at Sunderland City Hall.
Today, the choir continues that proud tradition as a friendly, welcoming and active part of Sunderland’s musical community, with the Mayor of the City of Sunderland as Patron.
